Description

JCU is a comprehensive government university with a specialisation in areas relating to the tropics, and a worldwide reputation for excellence in marine biology and environmental studies. Two major campuses in natural settings in Cairns and Townsville, on the North Queensland coast by the Great Barrier Reef offer a chance to study in a unique natural environment, with World Heritage listed rainforest and the GBR easily accessible from both cities.
The Cairns campus is surrounded by rainforest-covered hills on three sides, and the Townsville campus is set in natural bushland, and is home to wallabies, kangaroos, kookaburras, scrub turkies and cockatoos. With a total student population of 12,000 from over 70 countries around the world, JCU offers friendly and relaxed campus life and small class sizes. As a premier research university there are also opportunities to enjoy the type of facilities often reserved for graduate students.

Curriculum Overview

Marine biology, rainforest science, wildlife management, eco-tourism, and indigenous Asutralian studies are just some of the areas JCU specialises in. With over 140 undergraduate courses to choose from across the arts, social sciences, education, science, engineering, business, creative arts, IT, business, medicine, molecular and sports sciences, most options are covered.

Student Life

North Queensland offers over 300 days of sunshine a year, and with average temperatures throughout the academic year of around 77 to 85 degrees, most students make the most of the outdoor sports and leisure opportunities, including scuba diving, jet-skiing, bungee-jumping, snorkelling, bushwalking, or just relaxing on the tropical beaches. The ready availability of good housing both on and off-campus, the range of facilities in Townsville and Cairns, and the variety of habitats, with everything from bushland savannah to rainforest, mangrove swamps, wetlands and fertile tablelands make it an ideal place to explore. JCU has around 1200 international students from all over the world and the relaxed atmosphere make it easy to mix and find friends from around the world.

Special Services

There are some unique facilities at JCU, including: the southern hemisphere's only rainforest canopy crane in the ancient Daintree rainforest; our own research station on Orpheus Island on the Great Barrier Reef; the only university course in Australasia accredited by the World Tourism Organisation, and the chance for our Nursing Science Students to gain practical experience working on Australia's Royal Flying Doctor Service which uses small planes to provide medical services to remote communities in the outback. JCU also offers an Introduction to Underwater Photography course, where students learn to capture the wonders of the Great Barrier reef on film.
