Curriculum Overview
The qualifications offered by the University of Waikato prove popular with international students as they are structured to give students maximum flexibility to combine major and supporting subjects according to their individual interests and abilities, while ensuring that their multi-disciplinary programs are coherent and provide a sound basis for employment or further study. All international students attend a traditional Maori powhiri, formally welcoming them on to the University campus. International students are encouraged to undertake courses relevant to their degrees at home and if possible, courses about New Zealand/Pacific Society and Culture. International students currently at the University enjoy immensely these courses that offer an exciting academic and practical experience with a strong Pacific Rim focus. Management subjects are also particularly popular, as are Leisure Studies, Maori-cultural courses and programs with a strong environmental focus.
Student Life
The University of Waikato is located in the scenic river city of Hamilton , New Zealand 's fourth largest city in the central area of the North Island . The name "Waikato" is a Maori word, meaning "running water," and is the name of both the local province, and the river running through Hamilton . The Maori character of the campus is an important aspect of the University of Waikato 's identity.
Hamilton has all the attributes of a larger city without the smog, or traffic problems. The city is noted for its parks and river walkways, easy access to outdoors activities (skiing, whitewater rafting, hiking, caving, climbing, kayaking to name a few), a flourishing music, art and cafe culture. Students appreciate the relaxed atmosphere of the Waikato campus. The city is flat and easy to get around, and offers a significantly lower cost of living than Auckland .
